Power-assisted soaring

Power assisted soaring (PAS) is a type of soaring.
==History==
Traditionally the philosophy and practice of soaring is confined within the limited sphere of what is commonly referred to as gliding, though the technical term is soaring (and the aircraft are commonly referred to as pure gliders, technical term sailplanes). Power assisted soaring (PAS) as a unique mode (form, method and approach) of flying was neglected as a defined and recognized flying discipline, primarily because of the misguided recognition (of the use and application) and subsequent definition, and classification of the particular type of aircraft used: either Touring Motor Glider (TMG) as powered aircraft – or as sailplanes (gliders and self-launch gliders). Aviation authorities (legislators, regulators, associations) failed to recognize TMG as a distinctively separate type of aircraft, with unique features, capabilities and operational requirements, both for the pilot and the environment. Though the doctrine of PAS suggests a hybrid of soaring and power flying elements,– the traditional view (depending on the school of reference / pilot orientation) is that a TMG is primarily either operated as a sailplane (engine off), or as a power aircraft (engine operable, providing thrust to maintain straight and level flight) – reality however is different. Pilots with a proper understanding of the total operational envelope (flight limitations) of the TMG have always inadvertently practiced PAS to various degrees, incorporating simultaneously elements of soaring and power flying.
